25,000 children once photo listed on AdoptUSkids.org have been placed with a permanent family since 2004

Overview

There are 428,000 youth under the age of 18 in the U.S. foster care system. Of those children, 112,000 are currently waiting for adoptive families.

Since 2004, this campaign has encouraged the adoption of children from foster care by consistently delivering the message that "You don't have to be perfect to be a perfect parent." The latest series of PSAs in this award-winning campaign encourage prospective parents to consider adopting older teens from foster care, as older youth have lower adoption rates than younger children, and they often wait longer to be adopted. Currently, of the 5,560 youth photo-listed on the AdoptUSKids website as available for adoption, 43% are between the ages of 15 and 18 years old.

Using a humorous angle to communicate the seemingly challenging task of adopting a child from foster care, the PSAs reassure prospective parents that even if they are not “perfect,” they can provide the stability and security that older youth in foster care need and deserve. In the new PSAs, parents explore creative “multiple choice” solutions to relatable parenting challenges, such as a father helping his daughter improve her grades in French class, and a mother with a cat allergy trying to accommodate her son’s request for a family pet. The humorous, lighthearted scenarios aim to reassure prospective parents that teens in foster care don’t need perfection; they need the commitment and love a permanent family can provide.

The PSAs direct audiences to visit adoptuskids.org or to call 1-888-200-4005 (English) or 1-877-236-7831 (Spanish) to receive the latest information about the foster care system and the adoption process.
