Sam Champion
Sam Champion started at Eyewitness News in 1988 as the weekend and 5:00 p.m. weather anchor, eventually becoming the main weather anchor for the 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. Before joining WABC-TV, Champion was a weekend anchor and news reporter at WPSD-TV in Paducah, Kentucky. He began his career as an intern at WKYT-TV in Lexington and graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast news.
In 2006, Champion became the weather anchor for “Good Morning America.” In his capacity as weather editor, he built ABC News’ Weather, Climate and Environment Unit and oversaw all weather, climate and environmental coverage and content on all ABC platforms.
In 2012, he became the managing editor of the Weather Channel, where he created and hosted the four-hour morning show “AMHQ” and the prime-time climate and science interview program “23.5.”
Champion returned home to WABC in 2019, when he became the weather anchor for “Eyewitness News This Morning.” He joined the 10 a.m. newscast after its announcement in 2023.
Champion received a Peabody Award for his “Sandy Coverage” and has won four Emmys®. He was named to Out Magazine’s renowned Out100 list in 2023 and 2024, which honors the year’s most impactful and influential LGBTQ+ people.
